Project overview – understanding the need

All orphaned children are highly vulnerable; research shows that children who lose a parent are at greater risk of school dropout, mental trauma and socio-economic distress. There are 35,000 orphans in Israel. Following October 7, major security crises and war, another 670 children lost parents under traumatic circumstances — without a chance to say goodbye — compounding their grief with multi-layered trauma. Sunflowers gives them the support they need to cope with their grief and regain their strength.

Who we support

Children and young people aged 3-18 who have experienced the death of a parent or primary caregiver.

Wider community impact

Surviving parents, guardians, and extended families who receive guidance on supporting traumatised children.

Our response

Sunflowers operate specialised centres providing long-term psychological and grief recovery support for orphaned and bereaved children. With support from JNF UK they are opening and expanding dedicated centres across southern Israel to deliver psychological guidance, peer support groups and grief-processing resources.

Lives behind the project – a voice from Sunflowers

“For years, Sunflowers has provided a sanctuary for children going through bereavement. By expanding our support centres into southern communities hit hardest by trauma, we ensure no orphaned child is left to process their grief in isolation.”
